Glider Aerobatics will be invited to The World Games 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland, for the first time in history.  The FAI has announced that Glider Aerobatics, Parachuting Canopy Piloting and Paramotors have been selected by the IWGA (International World Games Association). All three will be grouped as disciplines under the Air Sports banner.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) is the responsible for organizing and governing these games, which will take place from the 3rd to 13th August 2017.

The World Games are held every four years and they have the goal to develop the popularity of the sports that are governed by its Member Federation, improve their prominence through excellent sporting achievement and to conserve all the traditional values of sport. World’s best athletes in the sports practiced on land, in the air, in and on the water will pursuit of who is the faster, higher, stronger and more precise. The World Games are an international multi-sport event meant for sports or disciplines that are not contested in the Olympic Games. They have been celebrated since 1981 and they include between 25 and 35 sports.

Parachuting Canopy Piloting and Paragliding were already included in the programme of 2013 edition in Cali, Colombia. The FAI Secretary General Susanne Schödel said: ‘the World Games 2013 in Cali were a great success for air sports, and the experience we gained will allow us to do even better in 2017. In the last edition we had two air sports events programed, so being granted one more is an honor that we are proud of and a challenge that we take up with wholehearted commitment and enthusiasm. We are thrilled to have three air sports events at The World Games 2017. It means a lot to be part of this global multi-sport event, as it brings public and media exposure worldwide. Our sports will benefit from it not only during the event, but also on a long-term basis’.

The World Glider Aerobatic Championship is one of the most important ones taking place every two years since 1985 under the auspices of the FAI and the European Glider Aerobatic Championship. The Commission Internationale de Voltige Aerienne (CIVA) is the responsible to organize and administrate both events. Glider Aerobatics is particularly successful and popular in Poland. Pilots have to demonstrate their ability to manage the glider’s speed, energy and position within a limited “box”. They are the actors in a three-dimensional ballet in the sky to impress the judges.
